Porn startup – Legal issues in India

I have been studying about the legality of porn startup in india. I would like to share and learn more about the business aspect of porn industry from my fellow entrepreneurs. Issues like funding, marketing, human-resources, channel partners and advertisers need to be brought to discussion.

why do u think it is not relevant? it is about starting a internet business. so, it is as relevant as anything else being presented. barcamp is un-conference and hence if someone can add a session on rubix cube, why cannot i discuss this topic?
I don’t think it’s irrelevant, it’s about time actually. But from what I heard this BarCamp is focused on tech issues, correct me if I’m misinformed.
I believe this would be an important topic for discussion. Porn industry has a big presence in internet market. They provide a significant amount of money to the ad platforms like goog and yhoo. I am not sure of the legal issues in India, but would definitely like to know what can be done and what cannot be done in this space in India.
come on, how many of us have not visited a porn site [ever] . Don’t u want to know what goes behind it?

the topic is as relevant as any other can be. c’on this is an idea ..just because it is spelled as four word assembled in any specific order does not make it obcene or bad.
and man ..no business is good or bad..because no money is bad..money is just that ,MONEY.
@abc: in general, the two ‘arguments’ you gave are not very valid.
after all, ALL sentences are just that, ‘some particular words in some particular order’. but still, some can even call for legal action or social riots or what have you. (i have no comments on the topic, but to abc’s line of argument)
‘no business is good or bad’ – that again is not correct from legal or moral standpoint! if that be the case, why is prostitution (or trade of body organs, bonded/child labor, …) not legal in many countries? that one question is actually a great one to blow up many misconceptions and false arguments of many societies.
Kiddie porn yields high revenue too.. going by abc’s logic, perhaps that should be considered “business” too ?
There is definitely a lot involved in providing porn services.
But there’s also a an complete loss of morals involved in the selling, buying and viewing of porn. Unlike most of you, I’ve worked in red light areas for about five years, and know what I’d talking about.
In india, the problem is because we hesitate to talk about sex, hence when we hear the word porn or sex we avoid talking, discussion. And I do not agree that only few ppl visits these sites. We do not know anyone’s personal life..how can we say that a person has not visited these sites. We should collect the data that what is the traffic percentages to these sites from different countries. I do agree as one of the post said that many exploitation happens behind the scene to generate the content for these sites. And I am not in the favour of these also.
Also I would like to know that what the niche concept/idea behind such a startup, where you want to differentiate….if you are going to open a similar site…then no use. Sex is a big topic and in good sense. Vatsayan wrote a book on the details of these…you can not take this book in bad or wrong sense. Try to see what differentiation you are creating. In india people get zero sex education…why dont you think something creative and take the challange of educating people about sex so that we can control many diseases in India.

I agree with Manish.. if sex education is wat is intended here, then this topic may remain but if sex business is wat being discussed here, am totally unhappy and cross with the moderators
I dont know about the legal issues about it. But I know it was the first business to make money on Internet. If its not offensive to the people attending it, and there are no legal issues attached with it, I guess, we shouldn’t have any problems having it part of barcamp.
the presenter never said ‘sex education’ but the word ‘porn’, which is NEVER used for education discussions. ‘porn’ by the very word has negative connotations. and as per indian law, porn is not legal. else why can’t i get one at the local DVD store by showing by beard or my ID (as proof of age)? any porn videos you have seen in india, are illegal. the closest indian law allows is debonair style soft partial nudity (of the upper torso).

porn is as legal in India as piracy and both are flourishing very well. we are all adults here and the discussion should’ve been contained within the boundaries of the presentation topic. i am completely surprised at the shallow mentality of some of the commenters. one of the friends forwarded me mail from barcamp mailing list and it is insane to see some of the justifications to throw out this topic.
what r u afraid of? each and everyone of you must have taken the pleasures of visiting a porn site. but in open, you want to be a moral police curtailing the freedom of speech and expression boundaries.

Well, this is a good one. Come’on we are adults! What interests me is if Lalith can put up the “Legal Issues” as the main idea instead of the “Porn” part of it. Anyone who wants to come up with a start up has got to know what hassles he/she can get into – so why not some of it coming from this perspective! And I believe Barcamp stood for “sharing of user generated ideas”. Barcamps in the past have had public health, politics, etc. This is very much at hand and relevant issue. It’s been a money making venture abroad, if the govt legalizes porn, I’m sure many would be interested in investments and it’d be a gr8 idea to put this up.
