The session will examine the compatibility of biometric surveillance technologies with human rights, supported by an analysis of the use cases of such technologies in India. At this time, biometric technologies play a vital role in identity verification to determine their access to public services. This opens up individuals to a variety of harms and in the case of false results could block them from accessing public services and result in human rights violations. The prevalence of using biometric technologies in India is analysed through an in-depth study of India’s socio-political and legal (regulatory) context and the ever-evolving civic-tech ecosystem.
