Semiconductors have become a domain of hectic geopolitical contestation. The supply chain’s vulnerability has sparked a spate of industrial policies aiming to “indigenise” semiconductor production.

This introductory talk will discuss the reasons behind the geopolitics of semiconductors. It begins with a quick technical overview of semiconductors. The second section discusses the reasons why semiconductors are “metacritical”. The last section of the talk will be about some politico-economic instruments that governments might deploy against each other in the near future.
