People like to believe that their opinions are independently formed. But they don’t realise how they are influenced by the Directors of Photography (photo editors) who are the anonymous makers and breakers of their opinion. While I have been privileged to work with many of the best photo departments in the world, I find myself fighting a battle on two fronts – to challenge and overcome the editor’s sentimentalist idea of India while also managing my proud fellow Indians’ self-image to somehow extract a critical representation of the country. I would like to present some of my photographs that accompanied magazine stories and also tell you the stories behind the stories.
